Why Will Ferrell Pushed for His Documentary on Friendship with a Trans Woman to Premiere Before the Election
Will Ferrell is brimming with enthusiasm about his candid and illuminating new documentary, “Will & Harper.” He harbors hopes that it will ignite compassion and conversation. The film delves into the enduring friendship between Ferrell and Harper Steele, a former “Saturday Night Live” head writer. Steele's revelation of being trans propels the duo on a poignant road trip. This heartfelt journey is now streaming on Netflix. The release timing held significant importance for them.
During an interview with Variety at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Ferrell emphasized, “When we sat down with Netflix, we made it clear that we wanted this out before the election.” He elaborated, “We wanted it to have enough runway for people to see it and hopefully start having important discussions in their living rooms.”
“Will & Harper” captures Steele’s late-in-life transition and addresses Ferrell’s inquisitiveness to comprehend her experience. Their cross-country voyage lays everything bare, blending heartwarming and challenging moments throughout their travels. Ferrell remarked, “It was amazing how we managed to keep the conversation flowing for six hours a day in a car, delving into profound topics.”
As trans rights have become a politicized issue nationwide, the documentary’s release is timely. A recent study reveals that anti-trans legislation correlates with increased suicide attempts among transgender and nonbinary youth, with spikes up to 72% in states enacting such laws.
Ferrell shared, “We’ve heard from people eager to watch this with friends and family who may have differing viewpoints, looking forward to experiencing it together.” He hopes the film will gradually erode some of the prevailing biases.
