‘Squid Game’ creator Hwang Dong-hyuk poured his heart and soul into crafting the show
"Squid Game" captivated audiences worldwide on Netflix, but its mastermind reveals the journey wasn't entirely smooth. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the producer, confessed to the BBC that he lost "eight or nine" teeth during the filming of the inaugural season.
What motivates a return for a subsequent season?
"Financial gain," he candidly admitted. Despite the monumental global triumph of the first series, the financial rewards were modest. "The second season will help redress the balance for the success of the first. Plus, the story remains incomplete."
The series delves into a grim reality where debt-ridden individuals participate in children's games to win substantial cash rewards.
In a world rife with war, climate change, and economic disparity, the creator views the show as a medium to explore societal conflicts—class, gender, generational, and political divides.
"New barriers are forming," he remarked. "We're entrenched in an era of 'us versus them.' Who can claim righteousness?"
The second chapter sees Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456 and portrayed by Lee Jung-jae, returning to rescue fellow contestants. Drama and tension will abound.
And what of the creator's stress, which once led to dental distress?
"I haven't visited my dentist recently, but more extractions may be imminent," he quipped.
Mark your calendars: "Squid Game" Season 2 debuts on Netflix on December 26.
