‘SNL’ Launches Season 50 with a Star-Studded Political Cold Open
"Saturday Night Live" launched its 50th season with a cold open teeming with prominent figures, spotlighting the forthcoming presidential race. The sketch lampooned campaign rallies for Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Maya Rudolph, stepping back into the shoes of Harris, humorously likened her campaign to Sabrina Carpenter’s hit "Espresso"—noting the lyrics may be ambiguous, but the vibes are undeniably compelling.
Alongside Rudolph, the stage was graced by renowned guests: Jim Gaffigan as Harris’ running mate Tim Walz, Andy Samberg portraying Harris’ spouse Doug Emhoff, and Dana Carvey embodying President Joe Biden.
Gaffigan, as Walz, embraced the governor's affable Minnesotan persona, jesting in his spirited Midwestern twang, “This suit is from Costco. It’s Kirkland brand. They even excel at dog food.”
Samberg elicited laughter with comments like, “It’s an honor to join the illustrious lineup of presidential spouses through history—predominantly women.”
In another segment, James Austin Johnson resumed his Trump portrayal, depicting a rally where the audience subtly dwindled during his lengthy discourse.
Introducing his running mate, Johnson, as Trump, quipped, “Some say he’s a questionable choice, and in many respects, they’re right.”
Cast member Bowen Yang appeared as Senator JD Vance, delivering a zinger: “How much do we adore Donald Trump? Earlier, he told me, ‘JD, you’re like a son to me because I don’t like you, yet you’re unavoidable.’”
The season premiere was hosted by Jean Smart, with Jelly Roll providing musical entertainment.
