Renowned vocalist Paul Simon remains "hopeful" about returning to live performances despite experiencing significant hearing loss in his left ear. During a conversation with The Guardian, released on Friday, the iconic singer-songwriter admitted that his auditory impairment complicates performing with a full ensemble, but he aspires to eventually execute a comprehensive concert. "I maintain hope," Simon expressed. "Half a year ago, I was more doubtful." Simon initially revealed his hearing difficulties in an interview with The Times in May 2023, mentioning that his hearing in the left ear diminished abruptly without any known cause, complicating his musical endeavors. Prior to this revelation, Simon concluded his touring activities in 2018, announcing the cessation of his touring journey. "I never proclaimed retirement," Simon clarified in his recent interview. "I declared a pause, which I adhered to. With the band and our setlist, we reached our zenith. It was gratifying, yet I was curious about what unfolds once you halt."

Upon pausing, Simon embarked on travels with his spouse, later experiencing a transformative dream that altered his reality. The Guardian reported that this dream inspired Simon to craft a work titled "Seven Psalms." The lyrics manifested through dreams over an extended period. This culminated in a 33-minute acoustic masterpiece, introduced in 2023. During the album's creation, Simon collaborated with seasoned filmmaker Alex Gibney, who chronicled the process in an extensive 3.5-hour documentary, "In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon." "Seven Psalms emerged uniquely," Simon shared with The Guardian. "There's a link between my childhood self, my subconscious, and my current identity. It was fascinating and delightful for quite some time, until my hearing loss disrupted the harmony." Recently, Simon performed alongside two guitarists at an event supporting the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss, marking his most extended performance in half a decade. "In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon," which debuted in March stateside, is scheduled for a UK cinematic release on October 13, coinciding with Simon’s 83rd birthday.
