Lisa Marie Presley Stored Late Son’s Remains at Home for Two Months, Her Memoir Reveals
Lisa Marie Presley was shattered by the tragic loss of her only son, Benjamin Keough, who passed away at 27 in 2020. The depth of her sorrow is now revealed. In "From Here to the Great Unknown," a posthumous memoir completed by her daughter, Riley Keough, Presley recounts how she kept her son's body at home rather than the morgue.
“They informed us we could care for the body ourselves, so she kept him with us on dry ice,” Keough wrote, utilizing recordings of her mother's reminiscences to finish the memoir. "It was crucial for my mom to have the necessary time to bid farewell, just like she had with her father. I would often sit in there with him."
As the sole offspring of the iconic Elvis Presley, Lisa Marie was only nine when her father succumbed to an apparent heart attack at 42 in 1977. Sadly, she herself passed away in January 2023 at 54, due to complications from earlier weight loss surgery.
In the memoir, Presley describes how her home featured a "separate casitas bedroom" where she placed her son, affectionately calling him "Ben Ben," after his passing.
“There is no legal requirement in California for immediate burial. I found a deeply compassionate funeral home director," Presley shares in the memoir. "I explained that having my father at home after his death was incredibly comforting because I could spend time and converse with him. She said, ‘Well, bring Ben Ben to your home. You can have him there.’"
Presley detailed that the room had to be kept at a temperature of 55 degrees. She expressed feeling "grateful for a way to continue parenting him, to delay parting until I felt ready to say goodbye."
Both Presley and her son now rest at Graceland, alongside her father.
