Kathy Bates Surprised by Overlooked Moment in Her 1991 Oscars Speech
For numerous years, Kathy Bates has harbored the belief that she overlooked expressing gratitude to a crucial individual during her Oscar acceptance speech in 1991, when she triumphed as best actress for her role in "Misery." In a conversation with Ben Mankiewicz on "CBS Sunday Morning," where she was promoting her latest series "Matlock," Bates reflected on her Oscar moment and her mother Bertye's reaction. "After winning the Oscar for 'Misery,' my mother remarked, 'I don't understand all the excitement; you didn't discover the cure for cancer,'" Bates reminisced. She mentioned she omitted thanking her mother during her speech, yet Mankiewicz countered this by presenting her with a video that clearly showed her acknowledging her mother. Bates was taken aback and visibly moved. "Thank you," she expressed to Mankiewicz. "Why did I convince myself I hadn't thanked her?" Kathy's mother passed away in 1997, and Bates expressed that her mother "deserved to live the life I've had." "Upon her passing, I wished for her essence to inhabit me," Bates shared. "Despite our many struggles, I desired her spirit to experience all the joys I was relishing, due to the sacrifices she made." Bates has revealed that her role in the revival of the procedural drama "Matlock" will be her swan song, as she intends to retire.
