James Gunn reveals Krypto, Superman's dog, will appear in new film – and the reason could tug at your heartstrings
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's the canine companion of Superman!
In exhilarating cinema updates for comic aficionados, James Gunn has revealed that Krypto, the extraordinary pet of Superman—aptly named after his celestial birthplace, Krypton—will grace the screen in next summer’s highly-anticipated "Superman" film, previously known as "Superman: Legacy." Jointly produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures (both under the Warner Bros. Discovery umbrella, as is CNN), this film promises to be a spectacle.
On Tuesday, Gunn unveiled a series of visuals on X, showing Superman alongside a dog, accompanied by a snapshot of Gunn with his own beloved canine.
Gunn elaborated that the film's four-legged, furry character is modeled after his dog Ozu, whom he adopted shortly after commencing work on the "Superman" screenplay.
"Ozu, who emerged from a hoarding scenario in a backyard teeming with 60 other dogs and was initially unfamiliar with humans, was challenging, to say the least," Gunn disclosed in his social media update. "He immediately invaded our home, obliterating shoes, furniture—even devouring my laptop. It took extensive time before he allowed any physical contact."
Gunn mused about the complexities life would hold if Ozu possessed superpowers, which sparked the inception of Krypto in the narrative. He explained that Krypto altered the storyline as Ozu was transforming his own life.
He noted the timing of his announcement coincides with Adopt A Shelter Dog month, celebrated every October.
The upcoming "Superman" film will feature "Pearl" actor David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and "Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult will step into the role of Lex Luthor. "Superman" is set to soar into theaters on July 11, 2025.
