For years, Shyne warned about Sean 'Diddy' Combs. Now, people are finally paying attention.
Moses “Shyne” Barrow has metamorphosed from a hip-hop artist to a political figure in Belize, where he now holds the esteemed title of "Honorable." In an interview with CNN, Barrow emphasized that this honorific is more than just a title for him.
"Every experience has sculpted and prepared me for my current reality. I'm precisely where I aspired to be," Barrow explained. "At 18, I vowed to lead an honorable life, refusing to drag my friends into trouble to save myself."
Barrow, now 46, reflected on his past, notably his connection with Sean “Diddy” Combs. In 1999, as a budding musician, Barrow was signed under Combs' Bad Boy Records. That fateful night in a New York nightclub, alongside Combs and Jennifer Lopez, erupted in gunfire, injuring three.
In the 2001 trial, while Combs and bodyguard Anthony Jones were exonerated, Barrow faced conviction for assault and firearm possession. His sentence: a decade behind bars, followed by deportation to Belize in 2009.
Barrow partially attributes his fate to Combs. "I voiced concerns about Diddy long ago, but they fell on deaf ears. It underscores the significance of my healing and achievements," he remarked.
His life journey is captured in the Hulu documentary "The Honorable Shyne," which commenced before Combs faced new legal battles. Barrow believes these issues only highlight his film’s core message of resilience.
"It amplifies the narrative, sharpening its focus," Barrow stated. The documentary chronicles his path from Belizean childhood to aspiring rapper in New York, under his mother's care.
After perfecting his rap skills, Combs noticed him, signing him in 1998. "My time with him was brief. Signed in ’98, I wasn’t often around him. Wealth was overwhelming, leading to reckless spending," he recounted. "1999 marked real interaction, a mentorship began, but ended with the Club New York event."
It took over two decades for Barrow and Combs to reconnect. Barrow, uninformed of Combs' recent legal woes, said, "I wasn’t privy to those matters. When we engaged, I saw none of it."
However, Barrow accused Combs of betrayal. "He called witnesses against me, despite our pleas. Anyone who sends another to prison intentionally is monstrous."
Combs' representatives refuted Barrow's claims to CNN, asserting, "Mr. Combs denies orchestrating Mr. Barrow's downfall. These are falsehoods."
"Mr. Combs, acquitted of all 1999 charges, maintains his innocence and rejects any malicious portrayal," the statement affirmed. "He respects Mr. Barrow’s journey and wishes him success. It's regrettable Mr. Barrow revisits these claims. Combs trusts in responsible reporting to highlight legal outcomes and his supportive legacy."
Now, as Opposition Leader in Belize's House of Representatives, Barrow sees this as his life's evolution. He preaches hope and wishes to unveil Belize's allure to the world.
"I’ve healed and forgiven," Barrow said of Combs. What lies ahead for Combs is, “for the judge and jury to determine.”
"The Honorable Shyne" is available on Hulu.
