Ariana Grande ignites controversy over 'Wicked' song lyrics
Ariana Grande seeks to dispel a widespread misconception about a lyric in the celebrated Broadway musical "Wicked."
Grande takes on the role of Glinda, later known as the good witch in "The Wizard of Oz," in the film adaptation of the musical. Alongside co-star Cynthia Erivo, who portrays the witch Elphaba, Grande has been engaging in extensive promotional activities for their forthcoming film.
The movie's social media recently unveiled a lyric video featuring Grande's rendition of "Popular."
"I’ll teach you the proper poise when you talk to boys," the lyrics read. However, Grande quickly clarified.
"It's 'ploys' !!!!!! Love you @wickedmovie," she commented on the Instagram post.
This sparked a lively debate among followers about whether it is "poise" or "ploys."
"I had to verify this because it means I've been singing the wrong lyrics for over two decades. Some sources list it as 'poise,' while others say 'ploys,' but apparently, the original CD booklet stated 'ploys????'" one individual remarked on X.
Grande is not the lone voice in this.
Jennafer Newberry Peery and Ginna Claire Mason, both of whom have portrayed Glinda on stage, concur with Grande.
"Just another Glinda here to say... proper ploys," Peery posted, while Mason added, "The text says poise, but it’s proper ploys."
"Wicked" is set to enchant theaters on November 22.
